Seriously, the work on the house that began in JANUARY is not done yet. You might think we're adding on an additional fucking house or transforming it into a mansion something, but no, not at all. The biggest thing was the attic remodel and that has been done for months. It's all the smaller shit that this goddamn general contractor has dragged out for months and months and months. We're down to the last dregs of work, and it is amazing how long he can drag this crap out. I cannot count high enough to estimate how many times I've heard, "Everything will be done by the end of the week." Apparently he is under the impression that "week" is a synonym for "decade".
What I don't understand is why. Doesn't he want to get it over with? Wouldn't he like to put an end to the steady stream of phone calls and emails and demands to hurry the hell up and, lately, threats? Doesn't he want to get paid? (He's gotten paid a lot already, as the work has slooooowly progressed, but there's a still a healthy chunk of change left to go. Doesn't he want it?) I just don't understand him. There is not much left to do — we're probably talking two days of work if they just got down to it. Just get someone out, get it done, get paid, and get us out of your life!
It doesn't help that problems continuously crop up with the work that has been done. One of the bathroom light switches stopped working (new wiring). The caulk in the corners of the (new) showers has developed cracks. The coat closet door won't stay on its track. And so on. Every time they fix something, some other issue rears its ugly head, to be added on to the list along with the work that hasn't been done in the first place.
I deeply resent my in-laws for taking the lowest bid and sticking us with this. Everyone always recommends not to take the lowest bid, especially when it's a lot lower, which he was. The thing is, the in-laws do know this. When we were getting the estimates (what feels like a thousand years ago), they repeatedly said that they would throw out the lowest bid. Then they got all the estimates and that went straight out the window. Of course, the cost has skyrocketed well above the original estimate, not to mention what we've paid in time and hassle.
We've been living rather like hobos within our own house for nearly four months now (we didn't move in until August) and it fucking sucks.
The in-laws will be here in about 11 days, and what I think I will do is take them, the general contractor, and all of his useless sub-contractors and throw them all in the Hudson River together.
